Sometimes new beginnings happen in the places you least expect - like the crocus coming up through a wheelchair practice area made of sand and gravel.
At Craig Hospital we celebrate every triumph as a new beginning after a catastrophic brain or spinal cord injury:
- The squeeze of a hand to signify understanding and comprehension
- The removal of a ventilator followed by a spontaneous breath, the ability to speak freely, or to once again experience the smell of perfume, chocolate or freshly mown grass
- Sitting up for the first time
- Leaving the confines of the hospital room to venture out in a wheelchair to interact with peers
- Learning to feed yourself again
- Attending an outing to a restaurant, shopping mall, or sporting event
- Returning to home, work or school
- Getting on a handcycle for the first time to compete in the Beijing Paralympics
Happy Spring to our remarkable patients and their stories of inspiration.

I have always tried to hide my efforts and wished my works to have a light joyousness of springtime which never lets anyone suspect the labors it has cost me.
