Bike to Work Day

Two patients with spinal cord injuries worked for several weeks in order to meet their goals of hand-cycling from Craig Hospital in Englewood to Civic Center Park in downtown Denver.  An entire team of staff, outpatients, and Craig graduates rode with them in celebration.  Congratulations to Jorje and Cole, for handcycling 22 miles! 

Craig Hospital gave away 300 helmets, a tradition at Denver's Bike-to-Work day for the past several years.

Jeni Exley featured on Pet Radio about raising service dogs

Jeni Exley of the CNS Medical Group at Craig Hospital was recently interviewed as a guest on Pet Life Radio with host Marcie Davis of New Mexico, who is a Craig graduate, a service dog owner, and author of the book "Working Like Dogs".

Cindy Graff, R.N. featured in the Denver Nursing Star, June 16th issue

Craig's own Cindy Graff, full time nurse in our Therapeutic Recreation department was featured last week in the Denver Nursing Star, page 4.  Cindy was interviewed and photographed by Cara O'Brien, and described the nature and importance of her work.  Cindy has worked as a nurse at Craig Hospital for 19 years, including the last five in the T-Rec. department.  Craig is one of the only rehabilitation hospitals in the U.S. with a full time nurse in the recreation department, which underscores Craig's innovation in rehabilitation strategies for patients with spinal cord injury and traumatic brain injury.  Cindy recently was part of our trip to Brown's Canyon for whitewater rafting.  For the full story go to: http://www.denversnursingstar.com/newsletter/pdfs/3465084_4542921.pdf

Craig Hospital patients go whitewater rafting: learn life skills and have a blast

June 15, 2009   A week ago on Monday, seven Craig inpatients with spinal cord injury, a former patient and Craig Board member, four family members, and ten staff and volunteers ran Brown's Canyon of the Arkansas River and had a great day!  Craig's Therapeutic Recreation department again teamed up with 4 Corners Rafting of Nathrop to enable our patients to experience the thrill of lifetime, and learn life skills at the same time.  Brown's Canyon was running at 1,700 cfs and it was a lively and wet ride.   All were safe, learned alot of functional skills and returned back to Craig by 6:00-  with huge smiles.  Below are three shots I took of our group in the famous Zoom Flume Rapid.  Thank you to 4 Corners for your decades of working with Craig Hospital and our patients.  And to our great T-Rec staff and our volunteers. www.craighospital.org

Craig Hospital Staff Member Named "Leadership Practioner of the Year"

The Colorado Society for Respiratory Care has named Lonnie Martinez as the "Leadership Practitioner of the Year." The Society promotes the professional advancement of Respiratory Therapists in Colorado and provides advocacy and wellness education in the communities they serve.

Lonnie Martinez, BS, RRT., joined Craig Hospital in 1996, and is currently the Director of Respiratory Care Services. He is also responsible for oversight of Radiology Services and Inpatient Transport Services.

Craig Staff Member Receives Outstanding Clinical Instructor Award 2009

Congratulations to Darrell Musick, who received the "Outstanding Clinical Instructor Award 2009" from the University of Colorado Denver Physical Therapy School. The Cerasoli Award for Outstanding Contributions to Physical Therapy Education is awarded to an individual who demonstrates "significant contributions toward the academic or clinical education of the student physical therapists at the University of Colorado Denver, role model worthy professional behavior in the educational process, creativity or innovation in educational activities and membership in the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA)." 

Craig Hospital is fortunate to have Darrell as part of the staff.
